17. Modeling with Hazards

A hazard rate represents the risk of an event occurring - like progression or death. Hazard rates change over time in nearly all biological processes.

A hazard function defines the changing hazard rate over time. By integrating hazard functions into your models, you can more accurately and flexibly represent disease progression.

This chapter will demonstrate how you can use hazards in your models.

  • Markov: to calculate event probabilities

  • DES: to define time-to-event distributions

  • PartSA: to define survival curves
