Two-Way Sensitivity Analysis
At TreeAge Software, our products are designed to give modelers the clarity and confidence they need when making complex decisions under uncertainty. One of the core ways we help analysts understand how uncertainty influences model recommendations is through sensitivity analysis, and in particular two-way sensitivity analysis.
What Is Two-Way Sensitivity Analysis?
Two-way sensitivity analysis is an extension of traditional one-way sensitivity analysis that examines the joint effects of uncertainty in two model parameters on the optimal decision or strategy. Rather than varying a single input while holding others fixed, this method systematically varies two uncertain parameters simultaneously across predefined ranges. The purpose is to identify how combined changes impact which strategy is optimal in your model.
How It Works in TreeAge Pro
- Select Your Parameters: In TreeAge Pro, you choose two variables that you believe are key drivers of uncertainty in your decision or cost-effectiveness model. You then specify the plausible range of values for each variable.
- Run the Analysis: Our decision analysis software runs the model repeatedly for each combination of values in the two ranges. Each run calculates the expected value (or net benefit) for all strategies.
- Visualize the Results:
- Region Graphs are generated showing which strategy is optimal at each point in the two-dimensional parameter space.
- Threshold lines appear where the optimal strategy changes from one alternative to another as the parameters vary. This provides a clear visual delineation of decision boundaries across the range of uncertainty.
- Interpretation: These region plots help you understand not just if but when changes in two key assumptions alter the recommended decision. For example, whether a treatment strategy remains cost-effective across plausible combinations of disease prevalence and test specificity.
Why It Matters
Two-way sensitivity analysis is particularly valuable when the parameters of interest are correlated or interact in meaningful ways. Unlike one-way analysis, which may provide a misleading picture if parameters move together in reality, two-way analysis captures the combined uncertainty space and reveals robust regions of decision stability versus critical areas where decisions flip.
