One-Way Sensitivity Analysis

At TreeAge Software, we build tools that help analysts, researchers, and decision-makers understand complex decisions under uncertainty. One-way sensitivity analysis is one of the fundamental deterministic sensitivity analysis methods embedded in TreeAge Pro that lets you explore how uncertainty in one model input at a time affects your model’s results.

What Is One-Way Sensitivity Analysis?

One-way sensitivity analysis involves systematically varying a single parameter across a defined range while holding all other inputs constant. By recalculating the model at each point in that range, you can see how changes in that one parameter influence key outputs, such as expected value, cost, effectiveness, or net benefit. This helps you pinpoint which uncertainties matter most and whether your conclusions are robust.

How It Works

In TreeAge Pro, our sensitivity analysis software, the process is straightforward:

  1. Select the variable you want to evaluate and define its lower and upper bounds. TreeAge supports ranges as absolute values or as percentage changes around the base case.
  2. Choose the number of intervals or steps across the range. You’ll typically generate N+1 model runs for N intervals.
  3. TreeAge runs the model repeatedly at each value within the range.
  4. Results are presented graphically and in detailed reports—showing how your output metrics change as the input varies.

These outputs include:

  • Line graphs of outcomes (e.g., expected value or net benefit) over the parameter range.
  • Threshold insights, where the optimal decision changes as the input varies.
  • Text reports that list model results at each analysis point and can be exported to Excel.

Why It Matters

One-way sensitivity analysis is often the first step in uncertainty exploration because it:

  • Highlights key drivers in your model, revealing which inputs have the greatest influence on results.
  • Supports transparency by showing how robust your base-case conclusions are to variation in individual assumptions.
  • Improves communication of uncertainty to stakeholders, regulators, or decision committees, especially in cost-effectiveness, health economics, or risk analysis contexts.

Discover It Now

In TreeAge Pro, one-way sensitivity analysis is integrated with other modeling features, so you can move seamlessly from building your decision tree or Markov model to examining uncertainty and interpreting strategic insights, with no coding required.
